Introduction

The Somali Society of Gastroenterology (SSG) stands as the national professional body uniting gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and endoscopists across Somalia. Established to promote excellence in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of digestive and liver diseases, SSG has become a leading platform for education, research, and public-health advancement in the country.

Empowering Professionals Through Education

A core pillar of SSG’s mission is continuous education and capacity building. The Society organizes national conferences, CME workshops, and webinars under its Somali GUT Academy to enhance the skills of Somali healthcare professionals. These programs focus on endoscopy techniques, hepatology updates, and evidence-based digestive disease management — helping practitioners stay aligned with global medical standards.

Driving Research and Innovation

SSG actively supports clinical research and national data generation. Through the planned Somali Digestive Disease Registry (SDDR), the Society aims to collect reliable data on gastrointestinal, liver, and cancer cases. This initiative will strengthen research collaboration among Somali universities, hospitals, and international partners while improving diagnostic and preventive strategies nationwide.

Advocacy and Public Health Impact

Beyond hospitals and clinics, SSG leads community engagement and public-awareness campaigns on digestive health. National events like World Digestive Health Day and Digestive Health Week Somalia encourage early screening, better nutrition, and hepatitis prevention. By collaborating with the Ministry of Health and global organizations, SSG contributes to shaping national policies that support quality digestive-health services for all Somalis.

Collaboration and Vision for the Future

SSG believes progress comes through partnership. It works closely with organizations such as the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO), World Endoscopy Organization (WEO), and Somali Medical Association (SMA) to promote shared learning and capacity development.
Under the leadership of Prof. Osman Mohamud Mohamed (Dufle) and the 2025–2028 Executive Council, SSG continues to strengthen Somalia’s gastroenterology services with professionalism, unity, and innovation.

Conclusion

As Somalia advances toward improved healthcare delivery, the Somali Society of Gastroenterology remains dedicated to education, research, and awareness that transform digestive health outcomes.

Motto: “Unity for Excellence in Digestive Health.”
